How a walls, beams & structural changes project actually unfolds
A beam sized by eye is a beam nobody can inspect, insure or explain to a buyer. Engineering costs a fraction of the framing and is what makes the work verifiable years later.
The load does not stop at the beam. It travels down through posts and footings to the ground, and the most common serious error is a correctly sized beam landing on a floor that was never designed to carry a point load.

FAQ
Walls, Beams & Structural Changes: what people ask us first
How do you know if a wall is load-bearing?
By what is above it and how the framing runs — a wall under a beam, under the ridge, or with joists lapping over it is carrying load; a wall running parallel to the joists usually is not. It is confirmed from the attic or the basement, not guessed at from the room. Load-bearing walls come out routinely; they just come out with a beam.
What is involved in removing a load-bearing wall?
An engineer sizes a beam — steel or engineered lumber — to carry what the wall carried, posts are placed at each end to take the load down to a footing that can bear it, the load is temporarily supported, the wall comes out, and the beam goes in. Anything inside the wall — plumbing, wiring, ductwork — is rerouted. It is permitted and inspected.
